Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients:
For the Salisbury Steak:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Onion Gravy:
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
Prepare the Salisbury Steaks:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into an oval patty.
Cook the Salisbury Steaks:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Make the Onion Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until they are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to coat. Cook for another minute to get rid of the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
Combine and Serve:
- Return the beef patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over each patty. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
- Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired, and serve hot with mashed potatoes and your choice of vegetables, like asparagus.
Enjoy your homemade Salisbury steak with onion gravy!
